5-8 | walk backwards (L-R-L) and tap right |
9-12 | grapevine right (side R, behind L, side R) and tap left |
13-16 | grapevine left (side L, behind R, side L) and tap right |
17-20 | stomp-stomp (R-L) and clap-clap |
21-24 | stomp-stomp (R-L) and clap-clap turning ¼ R |
count | steps |

1-2 | walk forwards left and tap right |
3-6 | shuffle backwards (R back, L close, R back) and tap left |
7-10 | chasse left (side L, close R, side L) and tap right |
11-12 | walk forwards right and tap left |
13-16 | shuffle backwards (L back, R close, L back) and tap right |
17-20 | chasse right (side R, close L, side R) and tap left turning ¼ R |
To make it fit 8 bar music repeats, either replace the side chasse with single side-tap or dance the shuffle backwards at double speed (with vocal phrasing).
count | steps |
---|---|
1-4 | grapevine right (side R, behind L, side R) + hitch/hop |
5-8 | grapevine left (side L, behind R, side L) + hitch/hop |
9-12 | walk backwards (R-L-R) + hitch/hop |
13-16 | rocks fwd-back-fwd (L-R-L) + hitch/hop turning ¼ left |
bar | figures (3 steps per bar of music) |

1 | LF cross basic (cross L in front, replace R back, side/close L) |
2 | RF cross basic (cross R in front, replace L back, side/close R) |
3 | L fwd basic (forwards L foot, close R, close L) |
4 | R fwd basic (forwards R foot, close L, close R) |
5 | L back basic (back L foot, close R, close L) |
6 | R back basic (back R foot, close L, close R) |
7 | L travelling turn (side L, turn ½ L, side R, turn ½ L, side L) |
8 | into grapevine L (cross R in front, side L, cross R behind) |
9 | cucaracha L (side L, replace side R, close L) |
10 | R travelling turn (side R, turn ½ R, side L, turn ½ R, side R) |
11 | into grapevine R (cross L in front, side R, cross L behind) |
12 | cucaracha R (side R, replace side L, close R) |
13 | L fwd half turn (fwd L foot, turn ¼ L, side R, turn ¼ L, close L) |
14 | R back basic (back R foot, close L, close R) |
15 | L fwd half turn (fwd L foot, turn ¼ L, side R, turn ¼ L, close L) |
16 | R back basic (back R foot, close L, close R) |
Dance a chasse instead of a travelling turn if floor space/surface is too dangerous.
count | steps |
---|---|
1-4 | grapevine right (side R, behind L, side R) + tap L |
5-8 | grapevine left (side L, behind R, side L) + tap R |
9-12 | walk backwards (R-L-R) + tap L (& clap) |
13-14 | fwd left + tap R (& clap behind) |
15-16 | back right + tap L (& clap in front) |
17-18 | fwd left + heel scuff R turning ¼ left |
Fix the sequence to go with the original music (ie 16 count repeat) by replacing the back walks with a single back step and tap (followed by the remaining steps).
count | steps |
---|---|
1-4 | grapevine right (side R, behind L, side R) + tap L |
5-8 | grapevine left (side L, behind R, side L) + tap R |
9-12 | backwards right + tap L; forwards left + tap R |
13-16 | back right + tap L; fwd left + heel scuff R turning ¼ L |
This is an extremely flexible sequence using genuine cha-cha figures. It can be danced as a single wall dance or a 4 wall dance (turning ¼ R). It can be danced solo as a line dance or with a partner in sweetheart hold (shadow position) or facing partner with steps in normal opposition. It can even be danced as a rumba instead. Line dancers (and OAPs) would normally start on beat 1 of a bar. Modern ballroom & latin american dancers would start on beat 2.
bar | figures |
---|---|
1 | LF cross basic (cross L foot in front, replace R back, chassé L) |
2 | RF cross basic (cross R foot in front, replace L back, chassé R) |
3 | Zigzag to R (cross L foot in front, side R, cross L behind, side R) |
4 | LF cross basic (cross L foot in front, replace R back, chassé L) |
5 | Zigzag to L (cross R foot in front, side L, cross R behind, side L) |
6 | RF cross basic (cross R foot in front, replace L back, chassé R) |
7 | Spot Turn to R (turn ¼ R + fwd L, turn ½ R + fwd R, turn ¼ R + chassé L) |
8 | Spot Turn to L (turn ¼ L + fwd R, turn ½ L + fwd L, turn ¼ L + chassé R) |
For the 4 wall version, turn less on the final spot turn (ie no turn into the final chassé).
For the sweetheart partner version, both still dance the same steps on the same foot but use switchback turns and locks instead of spot turns. The handhold is left-to-left and right-to-right over the shoulders, with the follower (or shortest person) in front and slightly to the right (then to the left between the switch turns).
bar | figures |
---|---|
7 | Switch Turn to R (fwd L, turn ½ R + fwd R, fwd lock L) |
8 | Switch Turn to L (fwd R, turn ½ L + fwd L, fwd lock R) |
For the version facing partner the follower is on the opposite foot and the cross basics become shoulder-to-shoulder figures with leader stepping outside partner on each side of the follower in turn. Use a shoulder level double handhold, not close hold, for most of it but let go and push off for the spot turns.
bar | figures as follower |
---|---|
1 | backwards cross basic (cross R foot behind, replace L back, chassé R) |
2 | backwards cross basic (cross L foot behind, replace R back, chassé L) |
3 | Zigzag to L (cross R foot behind, side L, cross R in front, side L) |
4 | backwards cross basic (cross R foot behind, replace L back, chassé R) |
5 | Zigzag to R (cross L foot behind, side R, cross L in front, side R) |
6 | backwards cross basic (cross L foot behind, replace R back, chassé L) |
7 | Spot Turn to L (turn ¼ L + fwd R, turn ½ L + fwd L, turn ¼ L + chassé R) |
8 | Spot Turn to R (turn ¼ R + fwd L, turn ½ R + fwd R, turn ¼ R + chassé L) |
As a rumba, all chassés and locks are replaced by single steps but the 4 step zigzag remains the same - using the gap beat.
This is a swing style dance using some genuine cha-cha and jive figures.
count | steps |
---|---|
1-4 | walks with swivel/pivot/switch-back turn (fwd R-L-R turn ½ L fwd L) |
5-8 | walks with swivel/pivot/switch-back turn (fwd R-L-R turn ½ L fwd L) |
9-12 | 2 taps (eg R heel then toe) + sailor step (R cross behind, L close, R side) |
13-16 | 2 taps (eg L heel then toe) + sailor step (L cross behind, R close, L side) |
17-20 | RF cross basic (cross R foot in front, replace L back, chassé R) |
21-24 | LF cross basic (cross L foot in front, replace R back, chassé L) |
24-28 | Spot Turn to L (turn ¼ L + fwd R, turn ½ L + fwd L, turn ¼ L + chassé R) |
29-32 | Spot Turn to R (turn ¼ R + fwd L, turn ½ R + fwd R, turn ¼ R + chassé L) |
count | steps |
---|---|
1-4 | walks forwards (R-L-R) and kick left foot fwd |
5-8 | walks backwards (L-R-L) and stomp right closed |
9-12 | chassé R (R side, L close, R side) and stomp left |
13-16 | chassé L (L side, R close, L side) and stomp right |
17-20 | R side, L stomp, L side, R stomp |
21-24 | R fwd, L stomp, L back, R stomp |
24-28 | fwd lock R (R-L-R) and scuff L foot through |
29-32 | fwd lock L (L-R-L) and R knee hitch with ½ turn L |
The eponymous "stomp" is a whole foot stamp on the ground but, unlike the paso doble appel, it is "without weight" - ie it acts like a tap or kick. Do scuff the ground but then immediately lift the foot again ready to make the next step. A hitch is a (scuff and) knee lift. Line dance locks going forwards don't have to be up on the balls of the feet but can instead be heel-toe-heel, especially if you're wearing cowboy boots. A forward chassé or shuffle is another option.
count | steps |
---|---|
1-4 | grapevine right (R side, L behind, R side, L in front) |
5-8 | cucaracha cross (R side, L side, R cross in front) |
9-12 | grapevine left (L side, R behind, L side, R in front) |
13-16 | cucaracha cross (L side, R side turning ¼ R, L in front) |
17-20 | R side point, R cross in front, L side point, L cross in front |
21-24 | R side point, R tap closed, R side point and hold |
24-28 | R cross in front, L side point, L cross in front, R side point |
29-32 | R tap closed, R side point, R tap closed and hold |
To make the sequence fit into a small space, pull the foot backwards slightly for the cucaracha crosses, don't turn to a new wall at the halfway mark and cross behind rather than in front for the last section.
The original music & video is weirdly appropriate for lockdown isolation! Depending upon how you count your beats, it's either super fast or super slow.
Both of those tracks have bars towards the end which don't quite fit the sequence. I specially edited my version of Weapon Of Choice to be a better match but you could pick any alternative track you like. Eg one of the earlier examples or something with a charleston swing to it.
count | steps |
---|---|
1-4 | diagonal walks to right (RLR) and flick left foot across |
5-8 | diagonal walks back left (LRL) and tap right foot |
9-12 | diagonal walks to left (RLR) and flick left foot |
13-16 | diagonal walks back right (LRL) and tap right foot |
17-20 | charleston = R fwd, L flick fwd, L back, R tap behind |
21-24 | charleston = R fwd, L flick fwd, L back, R tap behind |
24-28 | grapevine right (R side, L behind, R side) + tap left |
29-32 | grapevine left (L side, R behind, L side) turn ¼ L + tap R |
NB in line dancing there wouldn't normally be any swivel on the charleston steps.
Once again the original (unedited) track has bars which don't fit the sequence. For exact 8 bar repeats try the following:
count | steps |
---|---|
1-4 | heel-toe struts (right foot then left foot) |
5-8 | heel-toe struts (right foot then left foot) |
9-12 | into jazz box: cross right foot in front, step back left foot |
13-16 | ending with step side right for hip bumps (RLRL) |
17-20 | diagonal slide fwd right, tap left foot and clap |
21-24 | diagonal slide back left, tap right foot and clap |
24-28 | sailor steps (R behind, L close, R side; L behind, R close, L side) |
29-32 | R side point + hitch turning ¼ L; R side point + hitch |
This line dance was based on a sequence dance for couples. The line version has many people holding hands to be linked together side by side in each line (but needing to let go for the left turn at the end!).

This was allegedly based on the Finnjenka Dance (a folk dance). It's very much a drunken party dance for going around the room or even down the street. The lines are 3 people connected together via arms on shoulders - traditionally 2 men surrounding a woman and/or 2 women surrounding a man.

Girl version uses triple-step / chassé and turns ¼ left instead of right.
