About CUDT

Slick, sexy, and stamina building: Dancesport is the official title of International Standard and Latin American dancing.

CU Dancesport Team represents Cambridge in inter-university competitions throughout the year, in dances such as waltz, quickstep, cha, and jive. We are currently the university NATIONAL CHAMPIONS, and have consistently been in the top 2 British universities over the past decade. We have HALF-BLUE status, for both men and women, and compete in an annual varsity match against Oxford. The main team consists of 32 individuals, but an unlimited squad of beginners and experienced competitors joining us to competitions is well looked after.

As well as competing, the team performs at various May balls every year. All team members are part of the Cambridge Dancers Club and benefit from various CDC lessons and workshops.

Join CUDT…

Team members usually join CUDT after taking part in the trials at the start of the academic year. This year’s trials have already been held.

To be eligible for CUDT you must be a university student. The team’s focus is in representing Cambridge University so you must usually be a full-time student of the University of Cambridge. In special circumstances students from other universities may also compete alongside us in some of the competitions (but not the Varsity match). If you are a student but not at Cambridge please come along to the trials or email the CUDT Captain.

If you would like to join the team but missed the October team trials please contact the CUDT Captain.

About CUBDT...

Cambridge University Beginners’ Dancesport Team is an unlimited team of current students, which competes at all the major university dancesport competitions. CUBDT represents Cambridge University in the beginners’ events during the competition day with couples competing against beginners from several universities. Beginners’ compete in the Waltz and Quickstep for the modern dances and the Cha cha cha and Jive for the latin dances. Steps are restricted to basics, ensuring a fair competition. CDC provides beginners classes (both normal and fast-track) which teach you all the dances you need to compete.

Join CUBDT…

Cambridge University Beginners’ Dancesport Team welcomes new members throughout the year and there is just one requirement - you must have no Ballroom or Latin American dance experience (before Easter term of last year)! If you are interested in the competitive side of ballroom dancing, called Dancesport, please come along to our Beginners introduction to dancesport at 11:00 on Sat 18 October in St Matthew’s School Gym.

If you are unable to attend the trials please contact the CU Beginners' Team Captain .

Practice, Classes, Private Lessons

Practices

Members of CUDT must attend the team practice on Sundays 6-8pm in Parkside Community College gym.

Members of CUBDT should attend the beginner’s practice on Sundays 1-3pm in St Paul’s school.

Aside from team practice, members of CUDT are expected to practice at least twice more each week. One of these practices will be either the Tuesday modern closed practice from 7:30 to 9:30 or the Tuesday latin practice from 8 to 10pm. Team members often practice more than this - indeed, the more you practice the better chance you will have of winning!

Private Lessons

CUDT members also have at least one private lesson per week. Lessons usually take place on Sundays in Parkside Community College Gym, and occasionally will occur on weekday evenings. Lessons are booked through the Team Captain & Secretary by replying to the lesson request email. All replies must reach the team captain by noon Wednesday.
